4For Everything Outdoors . . . Except on the BikeJul 05, 2010
These sleek-looking, minimally designed, affordable sunglasses are probably the most versatile in the world of outdoor sports. I have worn them on the water, in the snow, hiking, biking, driving, canoeing, climbing, playing tennis and much more. What sets these shades apart from others of its class and from other companies is that they maintain a low profile (laying close to the face and temples), are quite rigid (rarely will they bend on an imperfectly shaped head such as my own), and light (most of time I am outdoors with them I actually forget that I'm wearing them). The XLJ lens is large enough to provide sufficient coverage from wind and debris while at the same time being small enough to prevent fogging. The construction of these sunglasses is such that they never bounce, never move, and, as I mentioned before, practically disappear from one's consciousness once wearing them.

If you plan on biking with these glasses, however, be warned. This specific model, the flak jacket, features extra long arms that wrap around the sides of the head to where the rear of the skull curves inwards. Although this rock solid construction makes these glasses ideal for running, triathlons, and playing tennis, the ends of the arms hit the back of my bike helmet. I have a Giro Ionos helmet, and these sunglasses simply do not sit comfortable on my head with a helmet on. I originally got these glasses for triathlons -- because they would be good biking and running -- and don't be fooled, they are some of the best for competing because of their weight and quality of sun protection. However, they are not the most comfortable sunglasses on the market or even that Oakley makes for biking.

Bottom line: get these glasses if you want an all around pair of sunglasses for any outdoor sport from tennis to rock climbing to sailing, but if you plan on biking, you may want to continue searching. These glasses are polarized, sturdy, affordable, good looking, and inconspicuous.

5Gr8 sunglassesMay 09, 2010
I have used these for now more than three years. I bought new lenses just yesterday, since I had abused the earlier ones pretty bad. Earlier I used to buy the cheap one and replace almost every three months. These polarized ones are really very comfortable. One should check for the perfect fit though at local store before buying it, since my wife could never find one model that fitted her well.
All in all it's a gr8 sun glass.

3Very cool design, but not suited for my headMar 23, 2010
I tried these on for maybe a minute at a local Sunglass Hut before ordering them online because the store charged $40-$50 more. After receiving them, I wore them on a 40-minute drive to church and learned the hard way that they did not fit me well. The nose pieces stood vertically and pinched the bridge of my nose. The arms were short and because of their curvature, their ends pinched the back of my head. Aside from this, visibility through the lenses was superb and the design was attractive. I returned them within the same week and ordered a pair of Ray-Ban RB8303 Gunmetal/Polar Grey Sunglasses without ever having tried them on (a bit of blind faith, you might say). I am so happy with the Ray-Ban RB8303 product; you can read about it in my separate review on it.

5best glasses I have ownedMar 23, 2010
this is the second pair of flak jacket XLJ I've owned. The first pair I still have and use, they are on their third year. I wear them riding bikes, to work in, and any time the sun is up. You can't beat the durability or the optics on these glasses. they cover the eye very well and block the Oklahoma wind and dust. Hands down these are the best sunglasses!

5Best Oakleys yetJul 06, 2009
This is my third pair of Oakley sunglasses. Previously I had two pair of Minute 1.0 shades. The two pair had combined to last 10 years total with minor repairs. My lenses were getting scratched and it was time for new rubbers so I set on getting a new pair.

For those not intimately familiar with Oakley, they put out an outstanding product for the discerning consumer. If you are tired of $15 sunglasses that break at the slightest flex, or fed up with poor lens quality that gives you headaches at the end of a long day outside, then Oakley is for you.

To be honest, at first I was not totally sold on any new Oakley style. A lot has changed in four years since I bought my last pair (the design of which by the way was then already 6-7 years old and getting ready to be phased out). The more I looked however the more I decided I wanted a practical sport style, as opposed to a fashion style. I decided to get a pair of the Flak Jackets, with jet black frames and black iridium polarized XLJ lenses. The clarity is truly top notch. The "rubbers" (Unobtanium) on the nose pads and ear stems grips so well all the time even if you're sweating. The fit feels like they are custom made. I especially like the wide open view of the XLJ lenses. The lenses extend further down to give greater coverage but they are not so huge as to get in the way or make you feel like you are wearing a ski mask. Oakley's website will have way better descriptions of all the details, but sum it up to say I love the shades.

If you aren't ready to spend good money on good sunglasses then you can go down to your gas station and pick out a pair right now that was made in China. Oakley definitely does not scrimp on quality and you get what you pay for. This will be evident the first time you wear them outside (and no, you cannot tell the full quality you are getting from inside the Sunglass Hut indoors). This is also my first pair of polarized lens in any sunglasses. Truly I could not be any more thrilled with my purchase. I continue to be a loyal Oakley customer.
